As the season draws to a close Gunners Live have compiled a countdown of Arsenal’s most disappointing games this season. There may even be a few suprises, but i doubt most Gooners won’t argue with the number 1 most disappointing game to date.
So, let the countdown begin…
5. Portsmouth 0-0 Arsenal - Away - Premier League
It was a cold Boxing Day at Fratton Park as Pompey and Arsenal played out a drab affair, and Man United snatched top spot away from Arsenal once again.
The best chance for Pompey came to Benjani who really should of put it away and given them a 1 goal lead. Instead, Arsenal had late, late chances in which Tomas Rosicky and William Gallas were guilty of not putting away.
Maybe this game just wasn’t going to be as exciting as some pundits built it up to be, that’s one of the reasons it gets in our top 5!
4. Sevilla 3-1 Arsenal - Away - Champions League
It was a hostile atmosphere at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium in Andalucia. The Gunners started brightly and in the 11th minute Eduardo gave them a lead with a well worked goal.
The equaliser came 15 minutes later from Seydou Keita, it was a peach of a goal and Sevilla were deservedly level.
As little as 10 minutes later, Luis Fabiano was allowed sufficient space to steer a near-post header into the far corner and give Sevilla a slender lead.
The second half was largely belonged to the Andalucian outfit. Their hard work paid off and in the 89th minute some good play from Freddie Kanoute (the former Spurs striker) and he was brought down by Sagna, the Mali striker stepped up and did the damage to make sure Sevilla top Group H and give Arsenala tough last 16 tie.
3. Middlesbrough 2-1 Arsenal - Away - Premier League
To date, Arsenal’s worst Premier League performance came against Boro at the Riverside where Gareth Southgate’s side stunned The Gunners.
A 4th minute penalty, won by former Gunner, Jeremie Aliadiere, was taken cooly by England winger Stewart Downing who made no mistake from the spot.
Boro had chances to extend their lead in the game leaving Arsenal to change their style of play and leave themselves open to Boro counter attacks.
With a quarter of an hour to go it looked as if Boro were going to get their vital second goal, and indeed they did. Some crisp passing found Tuncay Sanli, and the former Fenerbache star finished with aplomb to give Boro a stunning lead.
Tomas Rosicky replied in the final 10 seconds of injury time, but really that was Arsenal’s only real effort and gave Boro a deserved 3 points.
2. Manchester United 4-0 Arsenal - Away - FA Cup
Man United have been Arsenal’s main challengers to everything this season, and they certainly proved that with an impressive 4-0 win in the FA Cup 5th Round.
Straight from kick off it didn’t take a manager to see Arsenal looked weak in all areas, and Wayne Rooney proved it with a 16th minute goal which really got the ball rolling.
4 minutes later Nicklas Bendtner headed in a corner - in the wrong net to give United a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford. Were we going to come back from this? I didn’t think so, and most Gooners agreed with me.
Nani scored a goal before half time which made sure United would go into half time with a comfortable lead over The Arsenal.
Fletcher scored a late goal just to embarass Arsenal even more, and it proved that United’s in depth squad have the edge over Arséne Wenger’s squad this season.
1. Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 Arsenal - Away - Carling Cup
It was fairly obvious that this game was going to be the Number 1 Most Disappointing game this season. An absoloute thrashing, in this League Cup Semi 2nd Leg which led to a trophy for Tottenham who went on to beat Chelsea in the final 2-1.
It was ment to be for Spurs, a side who didn’t manage to beat Arsenal for 9 years. Jermaine Jenas started the rout in the 3rd minute with a crisp drive past Fabianski’s post, a Bendtner own goal gave them a 2-0 lead at half time and assured Spurs of making some history.
Robbie Keane extended ‘Spurs lead just as the second half began, Aaron Lennon then made it 4-0 with a silky run.
Emmanuel Adebayor came on for Arsenal and made an immediate impact with a super strike from the edge of the box.
But former Fulham midfielder Steed Malbranque completed the damage and added to The Gunners embarassment with a last minute goal to give Spurs an easy win over a poor, poor Arsenal fringe/first team side.
